What kind of hormone is GLP-1?
GLP-1 is glucagon short for glucagon-like peptide-1; it is primarily secreted from the L-cells of the intestine after food enters the gut. It not only acts through the blood but is also involved in signaling around the intestines and via the vagus nerve.
Incretins are hormones related to the phenomenon where orally ingested glucose, compared to intravenous administration, insulin secretion more than intravenous administration. GLP-1 is a representative incretin.
How is it secreted after eating?
Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins can stimulate the nutrient-sensing pathways of the intestine. Two stages of increase are observed, early and late, after a meal, and these are influenced by the amount and composition of food, as well as gastric emptying.
Natural GLP-1 is rapidly broken down by the DPP-4 enzyme. This is why it is difficult to explain daily secretion and appetite based on a single blood level measurement.
What role does it play in blood sugar?

Questions to Verify Online GLP-1 Claims
First, distinguish whether the claim refers to natural hormone secretion or prescription receptor agonists. Check if the research was conducted on humans, whether it refers to short-term hormone levels or actual food intake and weight results, and if it presents both the effect size and side effects.
Be cautious of expressions that blur the line between the two, such as 'natural GLP-1' or 'foods identical to injections.' Prescription treatments should be addressed in a separate medical guidance.
If I have a strong appetite, does that mean my GLP-1 response is weak?
Strong hunger or satiety deficiency alone cannot be used to estimate an individual's GLP-1 secretion. Actual eating behavior is shaped by a combination of food intake volume, gastric distension, other signals such as PYY, CCK, and ghrelin, as well as sleep, stress, medication, and the food environment. The experience of feeling hungry quickly after a meal is not labeled as a specific hormone deficiency.
Measuring GLP-1 levels in daily life is not a standard test for determining the cause of appetite. First, record hunger levels and amount before meals, eating speed, the timing of the next hunger sensation, and sleep. If there is repeated loss of control, vomiting, severe early satiety, or unintended weight changes, the cause of these symptoms should be evaluated rather than searching for foods that increase hormones.
Why must hormone explanations be separated from prescription treatments?
GLP-1 secreted by the body is a post-meal signal, whereas prescription drugs that act on GLP-1 receptors are treatments with specific indications, dosages, and monitoring for adverse reactions. Knowing the role of natural hormones does not determine whether a specific medication is appropriate for an individual. Expressions suggesting that the same exposure can be achieved through food must also be distinguished.
When choosing a treatment, personal information such as current medical conditions, medications being taken, possibility of pregnancy, gastrointestinal symptoms, and medical history are verified.
