Glucagon is a peptide hormone primarily secreted by the alpha cells of the pancreas that helps the liver release glucose during fasting, exercise, or hypoglycemia. While it acts in the opposite direction of insulin, they are not simply antagonistic, and fat burning or weight loss is not determined by a single blood level value.

What is glucagon?

Glucagon is a 29-amino acid peptide primarily produced by the alpha cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. blood sugarIts secretion can be stimulated when levels decrease or when amino acids increase.

What is its relationship with fat metabolism?

Glucagon is involved in fatty acid oxidation and ketone body production in the liver and can inhibit fat synthesis. In particular, the relationship between glucagon and insulin signaling is important.

This physiological action should not be misinterpreted as 'if glucagon is high, body fat is automatically lost.' Changes in overall body fat are the result of energy intake and consumption, as well as the responses of various tissues.

What is its relationship with insulin?

Insulin helps with glucose storage and utilization after meals, while glucagon helps the liver release glucose when needed. Although they act in opposite directions, they are in a cooperative relationship to maintain normal blood glucose levels.

Lowering insulin or raising glucagon itself is not used as a weight loss goal. Problems arise if either hormone is excessively deficient or if their regulation is disrupted.

How is it different from GLP-1?

How is it viewed during exercise and fasting?

When the energy demand of muscles increases during exercise, glucagon and catecholamines help the liver supply glucose. The response varies depending on training status, exercise intensity, and the meal consumed immediately prior.

The fact that fasting exercise alters glucagon does not guarantee greater long-term weight loss. Performance decline, the risk of hypoglycemia, and total daily intake must be considered together.

What is emergency glucagon?

Glucagon preparations may be used as emergency treatment for severe hypoglycemia where the patient is unable to consume carbohydrates on their own. diabetes Patients and caregivers must be educated in advance on the storage and usage of the prescribed formulation.

Medical evaluation is also necessary if unexplained hyperglycemia, weight loss, characteristic skin rashes, and symptoms of thrombosis appear together. Do not arbitrarily attempt hormone supplementation or fasting.

Example of comparing postprandial and fasting states

After eating a mixed meal, insulin rises to help with glucose utilization and storage, but amino acids from proteins can also stimulate glucagon. The two hormones react together to process nutrients without allowing blood glucose to drop excessively.

During overnight fasting, insulin signals decrease and glucagon helps the liver supply glucose. This is a normal adaptation between postprandial and fasting states; the goal of weight management is not to maintain one of these states all day.

In diabetes, this regulatory relationship may change, which can lead to insufficient postprandial glucagon suppression or issues with hypoglycemia response depending on the medication. Do not directly apply general physiological explanations to your individual medication dosage or fasting plan.

Is the 'insulin-to-glucagon ratio' a diet score?

The relative signaling of the two hormones is useful for explaining the direction of metabolism during postprandial and fasting states, but it is not a diet score to be managed as a target value at home. The meaning of the value varies depending on the time of blood collection, the preceding meal and amino acids, blood glucose, and liver condition. Do not use this ratio as a basis for skipping meals or using specific supplements to increase the ratio.

Changes in body fat are the result of long-term energy intake and expenditure, sleep, activity, and treatment, rather than the hormonal direction of a few days. Even if there are moments when fat utilization increases during fasting, it may not lead to long-term weight loss if followed by overeating or decreased activity. Describing hormones as being simply 'turned on or off' oversimplifies the body's regulation.

Why liver condition is important for glucagon response

Glucagon primarily raises blood glucose by breaking down glycogen stored in the liver and creating new glucose. In situations where the liver's stored fuel is insufficient, such as after prolonged fasting or severe alcohol consumption, the response to emergency glucagon may differ from expectations. Therefore, severe hypoglycemia should not be considered resolved by a single injection; emergency guidelines and subsequent observation must continue.

This is also why prolonged fasting cannot be recommended for people with liver disease or nutritional deficiencies. Check current diseases, medications, and hypoglycemia risk before any fasting plan.

What should be prepared if prescribed emergency medication?

Caregivers must also be aware of the storage location, usage instructions, and expiration date of the prescribed formulation. Do not force food or drinks into a person who is unconscious or unable to swallow. After administering the prescribed glucagon, seek help according to the personal emergency plan, and after recovery, identify the cause and the possibility of recurrence.

If hypoglycemia occurs repeatedly, do not blame diet alone; review the timing of insulin, glucose-lowering medications, exercise, and alcohol consumption together. If you have ever needed emergency glucagon, please be sure to inform your provider during your visit. Your current treatment plan may need to be re-evaluated.
