What is glycogen?
Glycogen is a storage carbohydrate that stores glucose molecules connected like branches. It is primarily stored in the liver and skeletal muscles and is quickly broken down to provide energy when needed. Unlike glucose floating in the blood or triglyceridesit is a different type of storage.
The body synthesizes and breaks down glycogen as it moves between post-meal and fasting states, and between rest and exercise. Because storage levels are not fixed, they can vary significantly within a few days for the same person depending on diet and activity.
What is the difference between liver and muscle glycogen?
Liver glycogen is broken down during fasting or between meals to contribute to blood sugar maintenance. The liver releases glucose into the blood so that other tissues can use it. In contrast, muscle glycogen is primarily used as exercise energy within the specific muscle where it is stored.
Therefore, simply stating that 'glycogen is present' does not reveal where or how much of it is stored. The roles of the liver and muscles, as well as the most recent meal and exercise, must be explained separately.
How is it stored after a meal?
When carbohydrates are digested and blood glucose levels rise, insulin signals help with glucose utilization and glycogen synthesis. The amount stored varies depending on how full the storage sites already were, the amount consumed, and the state of recovery after exercise.
Not all carbohydrates immediately become glycogen, nor do they all instantly turn into fat. The priority and amount are determined by the body's energy demands, storage status, and total intake.
How is it used during fasting and exercise?
During overnight fasting, the breakdown of liver glycogen helps supply blood glucose. Once exercise begins, active muscles use their own glycogen along with glucose and fatty acids from the blood, depending on the intensity and duration. As exercise intensity increases, the importance of carbohydrate fuel may grow.
It is difficult to conclude that storage has reached exactly 0 just because the stored amount has decreased. The remaining amount varies depending on the exercised area, training status, and measurement method.
Why does weight change along with water?
Glycogen exists with water when stored in tissues. While it is common to explain that several grams of water accompany 1g of glycogen, this is not a fixed individual conversion formula. The relationship varies depending on water balance and measurement conditions.

How should initial weight loss on a low-carbohydrate diet be viewed?
If carbohydrate intake is significantly reduced, weight may drop rapidly in the first week as glycogen stores, accompanying water, and intestinal contents decrease. If that entire number is calculated as a result of fat burning, it is easy to mistake it as a failure when the rate of loss slows down later.
Viewing the initial change as a baseline adjustment, we look at the weight trend over 2 to 4 weeks waist circumferencealong with the sustainability of the diet. If weight increases on a day when carbohydrates are increased again, it does not mean that the weight loss achievements disappeared in a single day.
Is weight gain after carbohydrate intake due to fat?
If your weight increases the day after eating out or consuming a lot of carbohydrates, it may be due to a combination of glycogen, water, sodium, and intestinal contents. Since an increase of 1kg of body fat requires a long-term energy surplus, we do not calculate fat gain based on a single day's number.
Check the trend over several days after returning to your usual conditions. Attempting to starve yourself or induce dehydration quickly can lead to larger fluctuations and may make exercise performance and dietary control more difficult.
How does this relate to exercise performance?
Muscle glycogen is a critical fuel for repeated high-intensity exercise and long-duration endurance activities. If stores are low, it may be difficult to maintain the same intensity, or you may feel fatigue more quickly. However, there is no need to add carbohydrates for every short and light daily activity.
Consider the duration and intensity of exercise, total daily intake, and weight loss goals together. Carbohydrates eaten for performance should not automatically be viewed as 'hindering weight loss,' nor is there a reason to perform all exercises in a depleted state for the sake of weight loss.
How should I recover after exercise?
Consuming carbohydrates after exercise helps with glycogen resynthesis, and protein supports muscle recovery. Recovery strategies differ between athletes with short intervals between high-intensity workouts and individuals who perform light exercise once a day.
For general weight management, rather than precise gram calculations every time, it is sufficient to allocate appropriate amounts of carbohydrates and protein within regular meals. If preparing for long-term training or a competition, a separate sports nutrition plan should be tailored.
How does this affect body composition tests?
Changes in glycogen and water can affect not only body weight but also the estimation of lean body mass using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Differences in results due to the previous day's exercise, carbohydrate/sodium intake, or measurement time are not interpreted as simple muscle increase or decrease.
Perform repeated measurements at similar times and under similar hydration and meal conditions, and look at the trend rather than a single value. Body Water On days with significant changes, record the uncertainty of the results.
Is glycogen-depletion exercise better for weight loss?
Exercising in a low-glycogen state may change the ratio of fuel used during that session. However, if intensity drops, total exercise volume decreases, or recovery and appetite control become difficult, it cannot be guaranteed that long-term results will be better.
Specific training methods are chosen based on the purpose of exercise and the individual's proficiency. If dizziness, cold sweats, or tremors occur, do not endure them as 'signs of fat burning'; stop exercising and check your condition.
Can glycogen be tested directly?
In research, methods such as muscle biopsy or magnetic resonance spectroscopy can be used, but these are not standard tests for measuring glycogen stores in routine weight management clinics. Do not interpret scales or smartwatches as providing an accurate measurement of glycogen in grams.
Practical estimation is possible by looking at meal and exercise records, weight fluctuations, and performance changes together, but these do not serve as diagnostic values. The target of measurement is also different from blood glucose tests.
When should I not dismiss it as a simple fluctuation?
If rapid weight gain is accompanied by shortness of breath, swelling or pain in one leg, or decreased urine output, it should not be assumed to be glycogen-related water weight. Recurring severe hypoglycemia, changes in consciousness, or fainting during exercise are also signals that require medical evaluation.
