Meaning of Body Water

Total body water refers to the total amount of water in the body, including blood and the areas inside and outside of cells. Since BIA first estimates total body water to calculate lean body mass and body fat, changes in hydration can affect the muscle mass and body fat mass shown on InBody.

What does body water include?

Body water is a concept that combines all the water inside cells and in the blood, lymph, and interstitial spaces. Lean tissues, such as muscles and organs, have a higher water ratio than fat tissues. People with a larger build and muscle massLarger people tend to have a larger L value for total body water.

Therefore, the fact that body water is high cannot be interpreted immediately as edema or excessive water intake. The absolute amount, the ratio relative to body weight, distribution, and symptoms must be viewed together.

What is the difference between intracellular water and extracellular water?

Intracellular water is the water inside cells, and extracellular water is the water in the plasma and interstitial spaces. Some multi-frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)estimates these two compartments separately and displays the extracellular water ratio.

This value is also an estimate based on an electrical model, not a result of physically separating and measuring the water. Check the reference range for each device, and do not diagnose a disease based on a single boundary value.

How is body water measured?

In research, total body water can be evaluated by consuming a certain amount of isotope-labeled substances and measuring the degree of dilution in body fluids. BIA provides a simpler estimate using the relationship between electrical resistance and height.

The simpler the method, the more it is influenced by the device's assumptions and measurement conditions. Remember that the accuracy requirements for clinical purposes and daily tracking are different.

Why water levels decrease in the early stages of dieting

When carbohydrate intake decreases, the liver and muscles' glycogenThis decreases, and stored water may also be released. Even if salt and total food intake decrease, body water and intestinal contents change. Therefore, initial weight loss may be faster than subsequent loss.

When carbohydrate and salt intake return to normal, some weight may increase again. This is not viewed as an increase in fat or yo-yo effecta yo-yo effect.

How does exercise change body water?

Water is lost through sweat during exercise, and after exercise, water distribution changes due to muscle blood flow, inflammatory responses, and glycogen recovery. The range of change may be larger in hot environments or during prolonged exercise.

If BIA is measured immediately after exercise, muscle mass and regional values may fluctuate. Body composition comparisons should be performed under similar, recovered conditions.

Do the menstrual cycle and salt also have an effect?

Hormonal changes and salt intake can cause temporary water retention and weight fluctuations depending on the individual. Patterns that repeat during specific cycles are easier to interpret when compared across the same cycle phases.

Do not drastically reduce your meals by calculating weight gain the day after a salty meal as fat. Look at the average over several days and other symptoms.

How do I distinguish between dehydration and edema?

Thirst, dark urine, dizziness, and significant weight loss after exercise can be clues to dehydration. Edema may appear as indentations when pressed, tightness in shoes or rings, swelling in specific areas, and rapid weight gain, but the cause cannot be determined by self-diagnosis alone.

dehydrationis a state where the body has lost more water than it needs, and it is not confirmed or excluded based on a single ratio from a body water meter.

Symptoms may exist even if the BIA ratio is normal, and even if the ratio is high, it may be a combination of body build and device error. A clinical evaluation may be necessary.

How should I record body water?

Record the weekly average using the same scale after morning urination, meals that were exceptionally high in salt or carbohydrates, exercise, and the menstrual cycle. For BIA, observe trends at 2 to 4 week intervals using the same time and device.

Do not force yourself to drink excessive water to hit a number, nor dehydrate yourself to lower your weight. Consume water regularly according to thirst, urine color, and your activity environment.

Signs that require prompt medical evaluation

Sudden swelling and pain in one leg, chest pain, shortness of breath, swelling of the face and tongue, confusion, or fainting require immediate evaluation. Rapid weight gain and systemic edema over a few days also require checking for causes such as heart, kidney, or liver issues.

Do not use diuretics or water restrictions arbitrarily; confirm guidelines appropriate for your medications and conditions with your medical staff.

Steps to identify the possibility of water in weight changes

If your daily weight changes significantly, first check the previous day's salt and carbohydrate intake, alcohol consumption, exercise involving heavy sweating, bowel movements, and your menstrual cycle. body fat mass·Observe whether the lean body mass and estimated total body water moved in the same or opposite directions. If they return to their original range within a few days, it is more likely due to water fluctuations than tissue changes.

Explaining a change as 'water' does not make all changes normal. If you experience symptoms such as swelling, shortness of breath, changes in urine output, or pain on one side of the body, medical evaluation takes priority over repeated weight measurements.

Why water should not be used as a means of weight control

Weight loss resulting from saunas, diuretics, or excessive water restriction is mostly fluid loss, not a reduction in body fat. Dehydration can cause dizziness, strain on the kidneys, and decreased athletic performance, and weight will return once fluids are replenished.

Conversely, drinking water rapidly beyond what is necessary to meet a set goal can also be dangerous. Regular intake tailored to temperature, activity level, medical conditions, and thirst should be the baseline.

How to standardize conditions before comparing BIA results

Priority should be given to using the same device at a similar time of day, with consistent meal, beverage, and exercise conditions. Large meals, excessive fluid intake, intense exercise, or saunas immediately before measurement can alter electrical resistance and fluid distribution. Wet or very cold contact points on the hands and feet, as well as differences in measurement posture, can also affect the results.

If perfect conditions cannot be met, record that day's meals, exercise, menstruation, and alcohol consumption. Rather than combining figures from different brands of devices, observe the long-term trend on the same device. Before assigning meaning to muscle or fat changes in 0.1kg increments, check how weight and body water moved simultaneously.

Why muscle mass may appear to change in a single day

BIA estimates lean body mass based on total body water and then calculates muscle-related indicators. If water decreases, the estimates for lean body mass and skeletal muscle mass may drop even if actual muscle protein remains the same; conversely, if water shifts to specific areas after exercise, it may appear as an increase. This is why a single day's result is not used to confirm muscle loss or gain.

Muscle changes are assessed by looking at repeated measurements under the same conditions, muscle strength, athletic performance, body circumference, and long-term weight trends. If total body water and lean body mass estimates continue to drop during rapid weight loss, accompanied by fatigue and decreased performance, review your diet and exercise plan.

Cases where medical examination takes priority over body water numbers

People with heart, kidney, or liver disease, or those taking diuretics, should not blindly follow general advice to 'drink more water' or 'reduce salt.' Water and sodium targets may vary depending on the stage of the disease, urine output, and test results. Do not change your prescription simply to make BIA ratios appear normal.

Medical evaluation takes priority over re-measuring body composition if there is a marked decrease in urine output accompanied by rapid swelling and weight gain, or if dizziness and changes in consciousness occur after severe vomiting or diarrhea. Swelling in one leg, chest pain, or shortness of breath are signals that require immediate evaluation.

The yo-yo effect refers to weight cycling, where weight increases again after intentional weight loss, and this cycle of decrease and increase repeats. This is different from weight gain due to water retention over a few days or a temporary plateau during weight loss, and definitions of the number of repetitions and the range of change are not unified across studies.

Frequently Asked Questions about Body Water

If my body water is high, does it mean I drank too much water?

The absolute amount of body water can be higher in people with a larger frame and higher lean body mass. You must look at the ratio, extracellular water, symptoms, and long-term trends together.

If the body water on my InBody result decreases, does that mean my body fat decreased?

No. A decrease in water changes the weight and lean body mass estimates, but it does not mean the same thing as a reduction in fat tissue. It may recover after a few days.

Does drinking a lot of water result in a higher muscle mass reading?

Rapid water intake and changes in fluid distribution can affect BIA estimates, but simply drinking water does not increase actual muscle mass.

Can edema be diagnosed using body water levels?

It is difficult to do so alone. It must be evaluated alongside symptoms such as swelling on one side, shortness of breath, and rapid weight gain, as well as physical examinations and tests.
