What is body fat mass?
Body fat mass is a value that expresses the amount of fat tissue stored in the body in kg. If it is estimated that 20kg of a 70kg body weight is fat, the body fat mass is 20kg. This is a broad value that includes not only stored fat but also essential fat necessary for maintaining life.
The numbers on home scales and InBody devices are not values obtained by directly removing and weighing fat. Body WaterInstead, they first estimate fat-free mass and then calculate the fat mass based on its relationship with total body weight.
How is it different from body fat percentage?
body fat percentageBody fat percentage expresses body fat mass as a percentage of total body weight. If the body fat mass is 20kg and the body weight is 70kg, it is approximately 28.6%. Even with the same amount of fat, if the body weight Lean Body Massis different, the body fat percentage will differ.
Therefore, even if two people have the same body fat percentage, the absolute amount of fat may be different. When recording weight loss, it is better to keep kg, %, and body weight together on one line.
How is body fat mass measured?
For body composition assessment, BIADXA, air displacement, skinfold thickness, and various compartmental models are used. Each method differs in assumptions, margins of error, cost, and accessibility. BIA, which is common in daily life, is fast but sensitive to body water status.
DXA is not a perfect direct measurement, and the device and analysis method can influence the results. Decimal results from different testing methods are not compared using the same standard.
Why values change over a short period
A long-term energy imbalance is required for actual body fat to change by 1kg. If the estimated body fat mass changes significantly in a single day, first consider hydration, meals, exercise, and device error.
Carbohydrates, salt intake, and the menstrual cycle dehydrationcan fluctuate body water and lean body mass calculations, which may affect how the remaining weight is allocated as fat.
How should I interpret average body fat mass?
Absolute fat mass naturally tends to be higher in people with greater height and weight, making it difficult to judge health status based solely on average kg for men and women. Body fat percentage, BMIwaist circumference, and fat distribution are considered together.
Averages by gender and age are for comparison only and are not individual goals. The appropriate range may vary depending on reproductive health, type of exercise, and medical conditions.
When losing weight, should I only focus on reducing body fat mass?
The goal is to reduce fat while preserving muscle, function, and nutritional status as much as possible. A large energy deficit, protein deficiency, and lack of resistance exercise can increase the loss of lean body mass.
Even if body fat mass is shown to decrease rapidly, the plan should be re-evaluated if muscle strength and vitality drop significantly or if menstrual irregularities occur. Increasing only the speed of numerical decrease is not healthy weight loss.
Can body fat change while weight remains the same?
Weight can remain similar if fat decreases while muscle, glycogen, and water increase. The opposite is also possible. This is commonly called body recomposition, but it is not confirmed based on short-term BIA changes alone.
Interpretation is more stable when tracking body composition indicators such as waist circumference, clothing fit, and muscle strength together over several weeks.
Under what conditions should measurements be repeated?
Maintain consistent conditions, such as using the same device, similar morning timeframes, after urination, and before meals and exercise. Avoid excessive drinking, very intense exercise, or significant hydration changes the day before the test, and record any unusual occurrences.
Rather than reacting to decimals daily, look at 2–4 week intervals and long-term trends. If the frequency of measurement increases anxiety, it is better to increase the interval.
Changes requiring medical evaluation
If weight and fat estimates increase or decrease rapidly without changes in diet or activity, and are accompanied by edema, thirst, fatigue, or menstrual changes, it is not viewed solely as a body composition issue. Endocrine and metabolic status, medications, and nutrition may be evaluated.
If weight loss leads to a loss of eating control and extreme restriction, eating health must be addressed before pursuing a lower body fat goal.

For this reason, you should not judge fat loss as a failure based solely on percentages, nor overlook muscle loss by looking only at kg. You must look at how the components of body weight moved together.
Items to include in the monthly record sheet
Record the measurement date, time, device, body weight, body fat mass (kg), body fat percentage (%), lean body mass, body water, and waist circumference on one line. Also note changes in conditions such as intense exercise, alcohol consumption the previous day, or the menstrual cycle.
After 4 weeks, review the average trend and changes in muscle strength and vitality rather than individual decimal points. If fat mass decreased but function and nutritional status worsened, the intensity of weight loss must be adjusted.
Can I compare body fat mass results across different devices?
BIA, DXA, and skinfold measurements use different principles and assumptions for dividing the body; even among BIA devices, electrode positions and manufacturer formulas may vary. Do not simply connect 18kg of body fat from one device and 16kg from another to calculate a 2kg decrease. It is safer to establish separate comparison standards before and after changing devices.
Even when using the same device, keep meal, hydration, exercise, and measurement times consistent. If body water and lean body mass move significantly together on the result sheet, consider the influence of water and calculation formulas before fat tissue changes. A good test is not necessarily one where different methods yield identical results, but one where repeated conditions and trends are maintained within each method.
What should I check if the trends for body weight and body fat mass differ?
If body weight decreased but body fat mass remained the same, it may be due to an initial decrease in water and glycogen or changes in lean body mass estimation. Conversely, even if body weight is similar, body composition can improve if fat mass decreases while muscle and water are maintained. Do not draw conclusions from a single day's result; look at the average over 4 weeks or more along with waist circumference.
A weight loss plan is not a competition to lower body fat mass as quickly as possible. Check health indicators such as muscle strength, activity performance, nutritional status, blood pressure, and blood glucose together. If rapid weight loss is accompanied by weakness, menstrual irregularities, or repeated dehydration, the decreased body fat mass should not be evaluated as a success alone; the intensity and cause of weight loss must be re-examined.
