How is body fat percentage calculated?
Body fat percentage is the estimated fat mass divided by total body weight, multiplied by 100. For example, if the body weight is 70kg and the estimated fat mass is 21kg, the body fat percentage is 30%. The issue is that results vary depending on how fat mass is measured.
Body fat percentage does not show the location of the fat. Even with the same percentage, Visceral fatand Subcutaneous fat the distribution may differ.
What measurement methods are available?
Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), air displacement and hydrostatic weighing, and bioelectrical impedance BIA among other methods. Each method has different assumptions and margins of error when separating fat from lean mass.
BIA, commonly used at home and in gyms, is easily accessible but Body Water sensitive to current conditions. It is better not to directly compare numbers from different devices.
How should I set the measurement conditions?
If possible, use the same device at a similar time, and under similar meal and exercise conditions. Factors such as high water intake immediately before measurement, intense exercise causing heavy sweating, alcohol consumption, and the menstrual cycle can affect the results.

Observe whether body fat percentage decreases as weight drops while muscle strength and function are maintained. Due to measurement errors, body fat percentage may fluctuate temporarily even if waist circumference and long-term trends are improving.
Create a plan to minimize lean body mass loss, including protein intake, strength activities, and sufficient recovery.
Why values differ by measurement method

How does hydration status change the numbers?
Exercise and sweat, alcohol consumption, salty foods, menstrual cycles, and whether you have eaten can change body water distribution and affect bioelectrical impedance results. Comparing a value measured immediately after exercise, when muscle blood flow and hydration have changed, with a previous morning measurement may show a larger difference than the actual change.
Standardize the measurement time and conditions regarding meals and exercise, such as after waking up and urinating; if an unusually large fluctuation occurs, re-verify before immediately adjusting your diet.
How do I set a target body fat percentage?
Online tables by gender and age are only reference ranges and should not independently determine an individual's health or exercise goals. Depending on a woman's reproductive function and hormonal status, an athlete's specific sport, or an older adult's muscle mass and fall risk, a lower value is not always advantageous.
Goals are set by considering the starting state, waist circumference, metabolic indicators, menstruation, physical strength, and a sustainable diet. Do not simply follow the figures of a specific photo or athlete.
Which changes are closer to actual signals?
Rather than a single body fat percentage reading, look at the average moving in the same direction over several weeks, along with waist circumference and how clothes fit. If weight decreases and muscle strength is maintained while waist circumference reduces, there is stronger evidence of consistent change than small fluctuations on a body composition device.
Conversely, if weight and body fat percentage drop rapidly while exercise performance, menstruation, and vitality worsen, re-evaluate the quality of the weight loss. Maintaining lean mass and function is more important than the speed of lowering the numbers.
Body fat percentage and body fat mass must be viewed together
Since body fat percentage is the proportion of fat relative to total weight, it can change even if the fat mass remains the same if the denominator (weight) or lean mass changes. For example, if lean mass estimates drop due to decreased hydration, the body fat percentage may appear to increase. Recording the percentage, kg, and weight on the same date makes it easier to distinguish the cause of the change.
Because the current, calculation formulas, and reference groups differ by device, it is difficult to directly compare results from different InBody machines or home scales. Average tables by gender and age are also not absolute boundaries for determining health.
Positive change during weight loss is not defined by a single number
Observe trends for 4 weeks or more using the same device and time of day, under similar hydration, meal, and exercise conditions. Also check if waist circumference is decreasing while muscle strength, menstruation, and vitality are maintained. Consider that a daily change of 1~2%p is more likely due to measurement conditions than actual fat loss.
Extremely restricting intake to lower body fat percentage may lead to a decrease in lean body mass and overall function. If menstrual irregularities, recurring injuries, sensitivity to cold, or severe fatigue occur, evaluate your nutrition and health status instead of trying to lower the target figure further.
Try recalculating changes in body fat percentage as body fat mass
If your weight is 70kg and body fat percentage is 30%, the estimated body fat mass is 21kg. If your weight later becomes 67kg and body fat percentage is 28%, it is calculated as approximately 18.8kg. Compared to looking only at the percentage difference, body fat massit is easier to understand how the overall body weight and fat mass changed together.
However, since the body fat percentage used in calculations is an estimate, it is not an exact measure of tissue mass down to the decimal point. Confirm the general direction using the same measurement method and conditions, and view it alongside lean body mass and waist circumference. There are cases where fat mass decreases and lean body mass is maintained even if total weight does not decrease.
Steps to take when body fat percentage plateaus
First, check the measurement time, hydration, menstrual cycle, whether it was immediately after exercise, and if the device was changed. Next, look at the average weight over the last few weeks, waist circumference, and records of meals and activity. You must distinguish whether a single day's result has stalled or if the trend over several weeks has stopped.
Even if it is an actual plateau, check your sleep, weekend meals, daily movement, and exercise recovery before drastically lowering your intake. If fatigue, hunger, or exercise performance have already worsened, it is necessary to address the sustainability of the plan first rather than imposing further restrictions.
A low body fat percentage is not always healthier
Essential fat is necessary for hormones, cellular function, and organ protection. Excessively low body fat and energy deficiency can lead to menstrual changes, decreased bone health, sensitivity to cold, fatigue, and poor exercise performance. Do not set goals based solely on a specific sport or aesthetic standards.
It is difficult to apply general body fat percentage tables to those in growth periods, pregnancy/lactation, the elderly, or those with a history of eating disorders and chronic diseases. If dizziness, fainting, cessation of menstruation, recurring injuries, or binge eating occur during the process of lowering the figures, evaluation must take priority over continuing weight loss.
