Meaning of Visceral Fat

Related terms: abdominal visceral fat, visceral fat, visceral adipose tissue

Visceral fat is fat that accumulates around the organs within the abdominal cavity. Its location differs from subcutaneous fat under the skin and is more closely related to the risk of metabolic abnormalities, but the visceral fat grade on home body composition devices is not a direct imaging measurement.

Where is visceral fat located?

Visceral fat is located around the abdominal organs, such as the liver and intestines. Subcutaneous fatis located directly under the skin, and these two types of fat differ in their blood flow, fatty acid release, and signaling molecule secretion characteristics.

When there is a high amount of abdominal visceral fat, insulin resistance, dyslipidemiathere is a tendency for increased cardiovascular risk.

How is it measured?

While CT and MRI can distinguish between the locations of visceral fat and subcutaneous fat, they are not used repeatedly for general weight loss tracking due to cost and radiation exposure. waist circumferenceis a simple indirect indicator.

BIA the device's Visceral fat levelSince this is a value estimated through body information and electrical resistance, you should refer only to changes under the same conditions rather than comparing between different devices.

Why is it related to metabolic risk?

Visceral fat releases fatty acids into the portal circulation and is associated with inflammatory signals, which can affect insulin responses in the liver and muscles. This is why fat distribution is important, not just total body fat mass.

However, visceral fat alone does not explain all metabolic abnormalities. Genetics, activity, sleep, diet, and medications all work together.

How can I reduce it?

A sustainable energy deficit and a combination of aerobic and strength activities can help reduce both overall fat and visceral fat. Reduce sugary drinks and excessive alcohol consumption, and structure your meals to include protein and dietary fiber.

Massaging or exercising specific areas of the abdomen will not selectively reduce fat in only those areas.

When is a medical evaluation necessary?

If your waist circumference exceeds the standard, you can evaluate blood pressure, blood glucose, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, and the risk of fatty liver together. If you experience sudden abdominal swelling, pain, vomiting, jaundice, or edema, do not assume it is just fat; seek a medical evaluation to determine the cause.

What are visceral fat area and visceral fat level?

CT and MRI scans can evaluate the area or volume of visceral fat in abdominal cross-sections, but cost, radiation exposure, and the purpose of the test must be considered. The 'visceral fat level' on body composition analyzers is an estimate based on electrical resistance and body information that varies by company; it is not the same unit as a CT area.

A level of 7 on one device cannot be compared to a level of 7 on another device as having the same meaning. Check the testing method, units, and company standards, and monitor long-term changes using the same method.

Why is it linked to metabolic risk?

Visceral fat tissue releases fatty acids and various signaling substances, which are related to the liver, insulin response, and inflammatory pathways. However, visceral fat alone does not determine all blood glucose and lipid abnormalities; genetics, muscle mass, activity, sleep, and diet also play a role.

The reason blood pressure, blood glucose, triglycerides, and HDL are checked together in people with large waist circumferences is that these risks often appear together. Rather than lowering a single indicator, the overall metabolic state is evaluated.

Can abdominal exercises reduce only visceral fat?

Sit-ups and core exercises build the strength and function of the torso muscles, but they do not selectively burn fat in that specific area. Changes in visceral fat are seen as the result of overall energy balance, aerobic and strength activities, and changes in sleep and alcohol consumption.

Claims that specific supplements or massages quickly remove only visceral fat should be verified by checking the measurement method, control group, and weight loss period. Do not mistake short-term water weight changes or waist compression for fat reduction.

Which indicators are used to track changes?

Waist circumference measured at the same position and average weekly weight are used as basics, and blood pressure, blood glucose/HbA1c, triglycerides, and liver enzymes are compared during regular check-ups. Medical staff will determine the necessity of imaging tests when there are other clinical purposes.

A single drop in the level on a body composition analyzer does not mean the risk has been resolved. It is important to check if multiple indicators are moving in the same direction and if those changes are maintained.

Visceral fat is different from fat that can be pinched by hand

Fat that can be pinched under the abdominal skin is primarily subcutaneous fat, while visceral fat is located around the organs inside the abdominal cavity. The amount of these two types of fat cannot be distinguished by appearance or touch alone. Waist circumference is a practical indicator for indirectly viewing visceral fat risk, but it is not a test that directly shows location like a CT or MRI.

The 'visceral fat level' on home body composition scales is an indicator based on the device's algorithm; it is not a unit like CT area or kg. Do not compare levels between different devices or conclude that a difference of 1 level represents an actual change in tissue.

What else is monitored when confirming reduction?

Waist circumference measured the same way, average weekly weight, and trends in blood pressure, blood glucose, and triglycerides are viewed together. Aerobic and strength activities, overall energy regulation, and sleep and alcohol patterns are comprehensively related, and it is difficult to selectively lose only abdominal fat through a specific exercise.

Even if weight is normal, waist circumference and metabolic indicators can be high. Conversely, a disease is not diagnosed based on a single visceral fat number; abnormal test results and family history are comprehensively evaluated by medical staff.

Can there be a risk of visceral fat even if I have a normal weight?

Even if your weight and BMI are within the normal range, the risk of blood sugar and lipid issues can be high depending on abdominal fat distribution, muscle mass, and genetic background. We do not ignore increases in waist circumference, hypertension, or abnormalities in fasting blood glucose and triglycerides simply because a person has a lean outward appearance.

Conversely, a high BMI does not necessarily mean that visceral fat and metabolic abnormalities are present to the same degree. To get a closer view of individual risk, one should not rely solely on scale classifications but should look at waist circumference at the same position, blood pressure, blood sugar and lipid tests, smoking habits, and family history together.

If the number on the device decreases, can it be seen as an actual reduction?

Home body composition analyzers estimate the visceral fat 'level' using electrical signals flowing through the body and input information. Since values can vary based on hydration, meals, exercise, and the device's algorithm, we do not directly compare numbers from different manufacturers or a one-level change within a single day.

Check the trend over several weeks using the same device and at the same time of day to see if average waist circumference and weight, as well as blood pressure, blood sugar, and triglycerides, are moving together. While accurate imaging tests may be necessary for specific medical purposes, repeated CT scans solely to check numbers must be considered alongside radiation exposure and cost.

Questions previously scattered across various posts are answered here

We have gathered questions that require the same judgment, even if expressed differently, into this guide.

Is all belly fat visceral fat?

Subcutaneous fat, which can be pinched from the outside, is not the same as visceral fat surrounding the organs. We interpret waist circumference, body composition indicators, and metabolic risks together, rather than diagnosing based on the shape of a specific area alone.

Related Terms

Visceral Fat: It is clearer when viewed with these terms

Body Composition · Measurement Waist circumference

Waist circumference is a simple anthropometric indicator related to abdominal fat distribution. For Korean adults, abdominal obesity is defined as 90cm or more for men and 85cm or more for women; trends can be compared if measured at the same location and under the same breathing conditions.

Body Composition · Measurement Subcutaneous fat

Subcutaneous fat is fat stored directly under the skin and is involved in maintaining body temperature, cushioning impacts, and storing energy. Fat that can be pinched by hand mainly falls into this category, but metabolic characteristics vary depending on the area and depth.

Comorbidities · Tests Metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a condition where risk factors such as abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high triglycerides, and low HDL cholesterol appear together in one person. When these factors overlap, the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes increases.

Metabolism & Hormones Insulin resistance

Insulin resistance is a condition where muscle, fat, and liver cells do not respond sufficiently to insulin signals. The pancreas may compensate by producing more insulin, but over time, if blood sugar levels rise, it can lead to prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.

Body Composition · Measurement Body fat percentage

Body fat percentage is the proportion of fat tissue relative to total body weight. Even with the same weight and BMI, body fat percentages can differ, and since results vary by measurement method and hydration status, trends under the same conditions are more important than absolute values.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Visceral Fat

If my stomach feels firm, is it visceral fat?

The location of fat cannot be distinguished by touch alone. Abdominal muscles, bloating, and subcutaneous fat also play a role. Please check your waist circumference and health indicators first.

Is the InBody visceral fat level accurate?

It is a value estimated by the device's algorithm and is not the same as the area directly measured by CT or MRI. Use it as a reference for trends under the same device and conditions.

Can I lose only visceral fat through abdominal exercises?

Exercising a specific area does not selectively reduce fat in only that area. Adjust whole-body aerobic and strength activities, energy intake, and sleep together.

Can lean people also have a lot of visceral fat?

Yes, it is possible. Even if the BMI is normal, waist circumference and metabolic indicators can be high. Do not rule out risk based on body type alone.

Page Summary

Visceral fat is fat that accumulates around the organs within the abdominal cavity. Its location differs from subcutaneous fat under the skin and is more closely related to the risk of metabolic abnormalities, but the visceral fat grade on home body composition devices is not a direct imaging measurement.

Key Points

  • Visceral fat is the fat located within the abdominal cavity around the organs, and its physiological characteristics differ from those of subcutaneous fat.
  • While waist circumference provides an indirect assessment of visceral fat, CT and MRI scans more directly distinguish the location of the fat.
  • It is difficult to target and lose only visceral fat through exercise of specific body parts alone; therefore, overall energy, activity, and sleep must be managed together.
