What is the visceral fat level?
The visceral fat level is measured by devices such as home body composition analyzers or InBody. BIA The device expresses the degree of visceral fat in stages. It is shown as an integer score or grade for easy user understanding, but it is not an internationally standardized physical unit.
Therefore, level 5 should not be interpreted as 5kg or a visceral fat area of 5. It is an indicator that shows the current estimated position within the categories created by the manufacturer.
How do devices estimate visceral fat?
BIA measures the body's resistance to a microcurrent to Body Waterestimate lean mass and fat mass. By inputting height, weight, gender, age, and trunk impedance into an algorithm, the visceral fat score can be calculated.
This is not a method of directly visualizing the fat inside the abdominal cavity. It is important to note that it is a predicted value based on the relationship between trunk impedance and imaging data from a population group.
How is this different from CT or MRI results?
CT and MRI can distinguish the area or volume of visceral fat in a specific cross-section through imaging. BIA levels are fast and easy to repeat, but they do not have the same accuracy or units as direct imaging measurements.
The purpose of a body composition test to monitor daily trends is different from when medical staff choose imaging for a precise evaluation of fat distribution. The necessity of the test is determined by considering radiation exposure, cost, and clinical circumstances.
Why the numbers differ by device
Current frequency, electrode position, reference groups, and score ranges vary by manufacturer and model. Some devices may use a scale of 1–9, while others use a wider scale, and the indication of the normal range is not the same.
If the number changes significantly on the day you switch devices, you should first suspect a difference in the scale rather than a change in fat. Even within the same brand, exercise caution when comparing if the model or software differs.
Can the level change within a single day?
Hydration, meals, exercise, alcohol consumption, and bowel movements can change impedance and body weight. If consecutive estimated values are near a stage boundary, a small error may be rounded, appearing as a 1-level difference.
Do not interpret this as a significant increase or decrease in actual visceral fat tissue occurring in just one day. Trends over several weeks or months under the same conditions are more important.
How do I read the normal range?
The 'normal' indication on the result sheet is a reference range determined by the device. Being within that range does not mean all metabolic risks are absent, nor does being outside of it confirm a disease.
Waist circumference, blood pressure, fastingblood sugar·HbA1c, triglycerides and HDL, fatty liver, and sleep status should be viewed together to get closer to an individual's actual risk.
What should I record while losing weight?
Measure 1 to 2 times a month using the same device and at the same time of day, and record the weekly average weight and waist circumference together. Also, note significant changes in conditions such as exercise, meals, alcohol consumption, and menstrual cycle immediately prior to measurement.
The level may remain the same while waist circumference and metabolic tests improve, or conversely, only the level may decrease while muscle strength and nutritional status worsen. Do not evaluate a plan based on a single score.
Can I lose only visceral fat?
Be cautious of claims that specific abdominal exercises, massages, or supplements can selectively remove only visceral fat. Overall energy regulation, aerobic and strength activities, and sleep and alcohol patterns are comprehensively related.
Abdominal exercises can strengthen muscles, but they do not guarantee the selective reduction of fat in that specific area. Judge based on sustainable behaviors and long-term indicators.
When a medical evaluation is necessary
If the level is high and there are abnormalities in blood pressure, blood sugar, lipids, fatty liver, or sleep apnea, the accompanying risks should be evaluated. Even if weight is normal, if there are abnormalities in waist circumference and tests, do not be reassured simply because the score is normal.
Sudden abdominal bloating, pain, edema, or rapid weight changes may not be issues of visceral fat levels; therefore, medical evaluation of the symptoms takes priority.
How to check if a level change reflects actual fat change
When the level decreases, check if the same device was used and if the timing, meals, exercise, and alcohol consumption before measurement were similar. If waist circumference and weekly average weight have also moved in the same direction for several weeks, the possibility of actual fat change increases. If only the level changes in one day while other indicators remain the same, consider it a measurement error first.
If the level on the result sheet is displayed only as an integer, a small change in the internal continuous value may have crossed a stage boundary. There is no guarantee that a drop from level 6 to 5 is the same amount of change as a drop from level 12 to 6.
Pitfalls when setting a target level
Do not apply a 'normal 1–9' range from another manufacturer seen online to your own device. Use the range in the model manual and interpretations from medical institutions, but set goals based on the improvement of waist circumference, metabolic tests, and daily functioning rather than the level itself.
Dehydrating yourself or manipulating meals just before a test to lower the score will only change the numbers and will not improve your health. Honest measurements under the same conditions are more appropriate for tracking purposes.
Over what period should I observe the level trend?
Visceral fat tissue does not increase or decrease by several levels in a single day. Level changes over a short period are likely influenced by body water, meals and bowel movements, blood flow after exercise, or the device algorithm's rounding. Observe the overall trend by looking at multiple values measured under similar conditions on the same device in chronological order.
When adjusting your weight loss plan, rather than relying on a single level, check your weekly average weight waist circumference, as well as your meal and activity logs. Your waist circumference may decrease and health indicators may improve even if the level remains the same; conversely, if the level decreases but the measurement conditions were different, it is difficult to view this as a definitive change.
If waist circumference and visceral fat levels move differently
Waist circumference measures the entire circumference of the abdomen, so it is affected by subcutaneous fat, abdominal bloating, and the measurement position. The visceral fat level is an estimated grade created by a BIA device using whole-body electrical values and physical information. These two indicators do not necessarily have to move in the exact same direction on the same day.
If discrepancies recur, first standardize the tape measure position, breathing, and BIA measurement conditions. If a more accurate evaluation of clinically significant abdominal obesity risk is required, blood pressure, blood glucose, lipids, medical history, and other tests as needed are reviewed together. One single number does not automatically invalidate another.
How is the effect of lifestyle changes verified?
Visceral fatRather than searching for specific foods or exercises, we manage sustainable energy deficits, aerobic and strength activities, and sleep and alcohol patterns together. Effectiveness is evaluated by combining long-term trends in waist circumference and weight, physical activity capacity, and risk indicators such as blood pressure, blood glucose, and lipids.
If you set a device score as your goal, your plan may be distorted, such as reducing hydration or changing behaviors immediately before measurement. First, verify whether changes that can be maintained in real life are accumulating and whether they continue without discomfort or nutritional deficiency.

If my level changed on a different InBody machine, does that mean my fat has changed?
Direct comparison is not possible because device models, algorithms, and measurement conditions differ. Please observe the trend using the same device under similar hydration and meal conditions.
Are visceral fat level and abdominal fat percentage the same?
They are different. Abdominal fat percentage usually refers to the waist-to-hip ratio, while visceral fat level is a score representing the device's estimate of the degree of visceral fat.
If my visceral fat level is normal, is metabolic testing unnecessary?
