What is the yo-yo effect?
The yo-yo effect refers to a pattern where weight is intentionally reduced and then increases again, and this process is repeated. In research, this is called weight cycling, although there is no unified standard for the number of kilograms, frequency, or years used as a baseline.
In daily life, even a single instance of weight regain may be called the yo-yo effect, so the definition in research may differ from that used in conversation. The duration and the extent of the change should be recorded specifically.
How is this different from weight gain over a few days?

Rather than just asking when rules were not followed, examine how life changed at that time. Knowing everything from moving, shift work, injuries, medication, to changes in sleep and stress makes it easier to establish a plan for maintaining weight again.
Steps to take when weight regain is detected
First, distinguish whether it is a fluctuation in water weight over a few days or an average trend over 2 weeks or more. Briefly resume recording meals and activities, and restore one or two behaviors that had the greatest impact. Do not immediately start a diet that is more extreme than the one used during the initial weight loss.
Setting an allowable range and a point for consultation in advance can prevent a small increase from being viewed as a failure. If there is repeated loss of control and compensatory behavior, eating disorder treatment takes priority over maintenance techniques.
What is missed when weight regain is interpreted as a lack of willpower?
Following weight loss, adaptations in hunger and energy expenditure, returning to previous environments, changes in sleep and activity, and the end of maintenance support can all act together. If this is viewed solely as a personality issue, it is easy to miss the conditions under which the weight began to move and return to more extreme restrictions.
