What is caffeine?
Caffeine is a substance that affects alertness in the brain and nervous system. It occurs naturally in plants such as coffee beans, tea leaves, and cacao, and is also added separately to energy drinks or certain foods. While it may make you feel less fatigued and improve concentration, it is not a substance that resolves the cause of fatigue or replaces necessary sleep.
The reaction to caffeine is not fixed. Even if the same person drinks the same beverage, the experience can vary depending on whether they are fasting, lack of sleep, stress, the time of intake, and any medications taken together.
Is it the same as coffee?
Coffee is a beverage containing various components, and caffeine is one of them. The amount of caffeine in 'one cup of coffee' varies depending on the type of bean, extraction method, and cup size. Decaf may not mean the caffeine content is exactly 0, so check the container label.
Conversely, caffeine can be consumed through tea, cola, chocolate, energy drinks, and some cold medicines, painkillers, or fatigue recovery drinks, even if you do not drink coffee. Therefore, it is difficult to determine the total daily intake simply by asking about the number of cups of coffee.
How does it work in the body?
Caffeine increases alertness by blocking adenosine receptors, which are involved in the process of feeling fatigue and drowsiness. After intake, it is absorbed, remains in the body for a certain period, and is metabolized in the liver. Just because the perceived effect has disappeared does not mean it is completely gone from the body.
Metabolism rates vary greatly by individual, and pregnancy, liver function, smoking status, and certain medications can have an effect. Do not assume that the reaction will be the same just because you drank the same amount as someone else.
Why is it difficult to know how much is contained?
The actual volume and recipe are more important than the name of the beverage. It is difficult to compare a small espresso and a large drip coffee by the number of cups, and energy drinks also vary in can size and concentration. Concentrated liquids or powders can contain large amounts even in small volumes.
In the nutrition or ingredient labels on the packaging, serving size per dosedistinguish between a serving and the entire container. Even if consumed in two separate portions, include both in the total daily amount, and for combination medicines, check for caffeine in the active ingredients list.
How many mg per day is acceptable?
Public institutions provide reference intake levels for healthy adults, but these are not treatment standards or absolute boundaries applicable to everyone. Individual judgment is required for those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, adolescents, or those with heart disease, anxiety, sleep issues, or those taking medication.
Do not interpret this to mean that symptoms can be ignored if you are below the number, or that it is definitely dangerous if you exceed it. If you feel discomfort even with small amounts, you should reduce the intake, and you should not consume multiple high-concentration formulations at once even if you are asymptomatic.
How does it affect sleep?
Caffeine in the late afternoon or evening can delay the time it takes to fall asleep and interfere with deep or continuous sleep. Even if you fall asleep, if you wake up frequently or do not feel refreshed the next day, sleep qualitytry recording the amount and the time of intake together.
A cycle can develop where you rely on caffeine to endure sleep deprivation, which then leads to falling asleep late again. During weight management, this cycle can also affect appetite control and exercise recovery, so the time of the last intake is as important as the total amount.
What changes occur in heart rate and blood pressure?
Some people, after consuming caffeine, heart ratemay experience a faster heart rate, feel the heartbeat more strongly, or experience temporary blood pressure changes. The magnitude of the response varies depending on usual consumption habits and individual sensitivity.
palpitations, tremors, and restlessness, sympathetic nervous system responses may be involved, but the cause is not concluded based on symptoms alone. Record the total daily amount and time, pulse, blood pressure, sleep, and any medications taken; if accompanied by chest pain, difficulty breathing, or fainting, prioritize emergency evaluation rather than waiting and attributing it to caffeine.
How should intake on an empty stomach and appetite suppression be viewed?
Some people feel more discomfort, such as heartburn, nausea, or tremors, when consuming caffeine on an empty stomach. While hunger may be temporarily reduced, this does not replace necessary nutritional intake or signify continuous body fat reduction.
The habit of skipping meals and relying on caffeine can lead to late-night binge eating or decreased sleep quality. Even if weight change appears rapid, dehydrationyou must examine whether it is a mix of caffeine effects and missed meals.
Why can it be uncomfortable to quit suddenly?
People who consume caffeine daily may experience headaches, drowsiness, fatigue, decreased concentration, and mood changes if they quit suddenly. While these symptoms need to be distinguished from new medical conditions, they can also be caused by caffeine withdrawal.
To reduce discomfort, consider gradually reducing the amount after checking your usual dosage and drink size. Adding painkillers containing caffeine to soothe a headache may make it difficult to calculate the actual amount being reduced.
What to look for when taking with medications or supplements
Caffeine may overlap with the effects or side effects of certain medications, and some medications can affect how long caffeine stays in your body. Please check for cold medicines, asthma medications, attention-related medications, thyroid medications, and supplements containing stimulants.
Since the possibility of interaction varies depending on the ingredients, dosage, and medical condition, do not arbitrarily stop taking a medication based on the name alone. Show your medication list and photos of your medicines and supplements to the medical staff drug interaction to verify whether they can be taken together and to confirm the dosing interval.
Can it overlap with weight management drinks or supplements?
Weight management drinks and supplements may contain other sources of caffeine, such as green tea extract, guarana, or coffee extract. Labels like 'natural' or 'plant-based' do not mean that they are caffeine-free or that overlapping intake is safe.
When using multiple items together, list the caffeine and other ingredients with similar stimulant effects in one table. Avoid adding coffee or energy drinks to increase the effect.
How to check while taking Baekrok Gambi-jeong
The prescription for Baekrok Gambi-jeong is adjusted based on your current health status and medications. If you are wondering if you can drink coffee, please inform Baekrokdam of the type, size, daily frequency, time of last intake, as well as any energy drinks, teas, or medications.
If new symptoms such as throbbing, tremors, insomnia, or severe anxiety occur after intake, contact Korean medicine doctor Choi Yeon-seung before the next dose. Do not arbitrarily add other medications to reduce symptoms or continue repeating the same prescription.
Signs that you need immediate help
If you experience chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, seizures, severe confusion, or a very fast and irregular heartbeat that does not go away after consuming caffeine or stimulants, seek help immediately from 119 or an emergency medical institution. This is not a situation to wait for a response from Baekrokdam.
Prompt consultation is necessary even before symptoms appear if you have accidentally consumed too much concentrated caffeine powder or liquid, or if the amount consumed is unknown. Please have the container and the time of intake ready.
Key points to remember when interpreting caffeine
Caffeine should be viewed in terms of total daily sources, intake timing, and individual reactions, rather than as a single unit like 'one cup of coffee.' Do not accept reactions such as insomnia and throbbing as a necessary part of the weight loss process.
While taking Baekrok Gambi-jeong, do not hide caffeine-related changes and report them before the next dose. If there are no emergency signals, you will receive guidance on prescription and lifestyle adjustments based on your records; if there are emergency signals, prioritize an immediate on-site evaluation.

Caffeine: It is clearer when viewed with these terms
Sleep quality is a concept that considers not only the duration of sleep but also the time taken to fall asleep, the frequency of waking up during the night, sleep continuity, the feeling of recovery in the morning, and daytime functioning. The fact that one has been lying down for a long time is not used alone to determine if sufficient restorative sleep has occurred.
→ Comorbidities · Tests PalpitationsPalpitations are symptoms where the heartbeat feels more prominent or uncomfortable than usual. This includes feeling the heart beat fast, strong, skipping beats, or feeling irregular. However, the actual type or cause of arrhythmia cannot be determined by feeling alone, so the pulse, duration, and accompanying symptoms must be checked together.
→ Activity, Sleep & Recovery Heart rateHeart rate is the number of times the heart beats per minute and can be estimated by the pulse. The meaning of the value differs between resting and exercising, and since it varies depending on body temperature, posture, emotion, medication, and physical fitness, a single number is not interpreted as an absolute score for fitness or safety.
→ Comorbidities · Tests Blood pressureBlood pressure is a value represented by two numbers, systolic and diastolic, indicating the pressure blood exerts on the arterial walls while the heart pumps blood out and rests. Since it varies based on posture, rest, cuff size, caffeine, and exercise, a single measurement is not used to determine your usual state or the appropriate prescription.
→ Comorbidities · Tests Drug interactionA drug interaction is a phenomenon where the effect or side effect of one medication changes due to another drug, food, drink, health functional food, or a medical condition. The mere fact that they were taken together does not confirm an interaction, but you must disclose all prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, Korean herbal medicine, and supplements to allow for a risk assessment.
→ Comorbidities · Tests EphedraMa Huang is a plant-based medicinal herb used in Korean herbal medicine prescriptions and may contain ephedrine-type alkaloids. The total amount of the herb is not the same as the amount of a specific component; since this varies depending on the species, part of the plant, processing, and prescription composition, individual prescriptions should not be calculated based on single values found on the internet.

Frequently Asked Questions about Caffeine
Are caffeine and coffee the same thing?
No. Caffeine is one of the ingredients found in coffee, and it can also be found in tea, energy drinks, chocolate, and some medications. Small amounts may remain even in decaffeinated drinks.
Up to how many mg per day is unconditionally safe?
While reference ranges for general adults are sometimes provided, there is no single standard that is unconditionally safe for everyone. Pregnancy, medical conditions, medications, individual sensitivity, and the timing of intake must be considered together.
Does drinking caffeine lead to weight loss?
Temporary stimulation or metabolic changes do not equate to a reduction in body fat. If it interferes with sleep or disrupts meal and exercise plans, it may actually be disadvantageous for weight management.
Can I take Baekrok Gambi-jeong and coffee together?
Instructions may vary depending on your prescription and individual condition. Do not combine medications arbitrarily; please list all coffee, tea, energy drinks, and caffeine-containing medications and verify them with the Baekrokdam medical staff.
