What is heart rate?
Heart rate is the number of times the heart contracts in 1 minute. It constantly changes during rest, activity, and emotional states depending on the body's need for oxygen and nutrients. It is usually expressed as beats per minute (bpm).
A lower number does not necessarily mean you are healthier, nor does a higher number automatically mean you are at risk. Age, physical fitness, body temperature, posture, sleep, medications, and the measurement environment are all considered together.
How is it different from pulse?
Pulse is the pressure wave created when the heart pumps blood, which is felt in peripheral blood vessels such as the wrist or neck. In normal conditions, the pulse rate and heart rate are nearly identical, so the terms are often used interchangeably in daily life.
In some types of arrhythmia, the heartbeat may not be transmitted to the periphery as a sufficient pulse, leading to a difference. If the heart rate measured by a device and the pulse felt by hand are consistently different and accompanied by symptoms, you should seek a medical evaluation.
How do I measure resting heart rate?
Avoid measuring immediately after exercise, caffeine intake, or smoking; instead, measure while sitting or lying quietly in a sufficiently relaxed state. Gently place your index and middle fingers on the inside of your wrist to count the beats and feel for regularity.
Counting for a short period and multiplying is convenient for a regular pulse, but if it is irregular, it is better to count for the full 60 seconds. Record the date, time, posture, and any symptoms together.
What is the common resting range for adults?
Many official guidelines describe the resting heart rate of a relaxed adult as being in the range of 60 to 100 beats per minute. However, it may be lower than 60 for athletes, during sleep, or for people taking medications such as beta-blockers.
A single number being within the range does not mean there are no problems, nor does a number outside the range automatically confirm a disease. Changes from your usual baseline, persistence, and symptoms such as dizziness, chest pain, or fainting are considered together.
Why does heart rate change?
Exercise, fever, pain, anxiety, and stress can increase the heart rate. dehydrationAnemia, changes in thyroid function, infections, and heart disease also have an effect. It may change briefly when waking up or changing posture.
CaffeineNicotine, cold medications, and certain prescription drugs or supplements are also checked. Rather than concluding a single cause, the timing of occurrence is compared with medication records.
How should I interpret my heart rate during exercise?

What is recovery heart rate?
Recovery heart rate refers to how quickly your heart rate drops after you stop exercising. It is influenced by physical fitness, exercise intensity, heat, hydration status, and the timing of the measurement. Heart health is not diagnosed based on a single difference.
You can refer to long-term trends under the same exercise and conditions, but do not collapse suddenly after exercise; perform a slow cool-down. If symptoms are present, safety evaluation takes priority over recovery numbers.
How reliable is a smartwatch heart rate monitor?
Wrist-based optical sensors estimate pulse by using changes in skin blood flow. Errors may occur depending on movement, wearing position, skin contact, and rhythm, and short episodes of arrhythmia may be missed or incorrectly reported.
Use it to record trends from the same device and the timing of symptoms, but do not consider it equivalent to a medical-grade ECG. If abnormal notifications repeat, capture the screen and show it to your medical provider.
How is this different from palpitations?
palpitationsPalpitations are symptoms where you prominently feel your heartbeat, whereas heart rate is the measured count. You may feel strong beats or skipped beats even if the heart rate is not fast, or you may feel nothing even if the heart rate is fast.
If symptoms occur, record the speed, regularity, duration, activity, and accompanying signals. The cause is not determined by feeling or numbers alone.
Why it is viewed together with blood pressure
blood pressureand heart rate both show the state of circulation, but they are not the same indicator. Even if the heart rate rises, blood pressure does not necessarily move in the same direction, and medications may act differently on the two values.
It is helpful to record both values at the same time when experiencing dizziness or palpitations. However, if symptoms are severe, do not delay emergency response while searching for a device.
What should I record during weight management?
Record your resting pulse in the morning, values and symptoms before and after exercise, sleep, caffeine, hydration, and all medications taken. Observe if values higher than usual persist for several days or repeatedly overlap with specific medication times.
If a rapid increase in pulse, dizziness, and weakness occur while weight is dropping quickly, it is not viewed as a positive sign of weight loss. Check for excessive restriction, dehydration, and medication reactions.
When to seek immediate help
If a fast or irregular beat persists along with chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting, or a feeling that you might faint, seek emergency evaluation immediately. Use 119 if accompanied by new onset of one-sided paralysis, slurred speech, or changes in consciousness.
Situations involving a very slow pulse combined with severe dizziness, fainting, and cold, clammy skin also require prompt help. Do not wait for the device numbers to return to normal.
