What is included in aerobic exercise?

These are activities that use large muscles continuously, such as brisk walking, running, cycling, swimming, dancing, and climbing stairs. Not only activities at fitness centers, but also walking during commutes and housework can be included if the intensity is sufficient.

What are the benefits other than weight loss?

Regular aerobic activity helps with cardiorespiratory fitness and blood pressure, insulin can be helpful for responses and blood lipids. There are also benefits for sleep, mood, and daily functioning.

Even if the change on the scale is small, physical strength and waist circumferencemetabolic indicators can improve, so the value of exercise is not judged by weight alone.

How much should I do?

The U.S. Physical Activity Guidelines recommend that adults engage in 150~300 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75~150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity per week, along with muscle-strengthening activities. These are long-term goals, and you do not need to meet all of them from the beginning for your efforts to count as a start.

You can start with a 10-minute walk and gradually increase the weekly duration and frequency.

How can I tell the intensity?

For moderate intensity, a common standard is being able to converse but finding it difficult to sing. At high intensity, you should need to take a breath after a few words. If you are taking heart rate medication or have a medical condition, the talk test and subjective exercise intensity may be more useful.

Harder is not always better; mix intensities according to your goals and recovery.

When should I be cautious?

If you experience chest pain, fainting, abnormal shortness of breath, or palpitations during exercise, stop immediately and seek a medical evaluation. If you have heart or lung disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, or joint pain, discuss a safe intensity level before starting.

How do I distinguish between aerobic exercise and daily activities?

Exercise is a physical activity performed repeatedly with a set time and intensity, while daily activities are movements that occur during life, such as commuting or housework. Both activities use energy, but it is better to record them separately. This is because if fatigue from starting exercise significantly reduces your steps and housework during the rest of the day, your total daily activity level may not increase as expected.

By looking at records of walking 3 times a week along with average daily steps and time spent sitting for long periods, you can identify changes outside of exercise time. This is also why weight loss effects are not calculated based solely on the calories burned in a single exercise session.

How should I increase the intensity when starting out?

If you are currently barely moving, instead of setting the weekly recommendation as your first goal, find a starting point that you can repeat without pain. For example, walk for 10 minutes after meals 4 days a week, and then increase the duration by 5 minutes per session the following week. Increasing time, frequency, and intensity all at once makes it difficult to sustain due to fatigue and pain.

Observe whether fatigue remains the next day to the extent that it interferes with daily life, or if shortness of breath has decreased slightly at the same speed. Once recovery stabilizes, it is safer to first increase the weekly duration, and then increase the speed or incline of certain sections.

What should I record even if my weight does not decrease?

The time taken for the same distance, the ability to speak while walking, and the recovery time after exercise show changes in cardiorespiratory fitness. Waist circumference, blood pressure, resting heart rate, and shortness of breath when climbing stairs also serve as data to confirm changes other than weight.

Weight immediately after exercise varies depending on sweat and fluid intake, so it should not be interpreted as a change in body fat. It is easier to read the trend when weekly average weight under the same conditions, monthly waist circumference, and exercise performance records are kept side by side.

Compensatory behaviors after exercise must also be considered

If additional drinks or snacks are added because you exercised, or if you barely move during the remaining time, the actual energy difference may be small. Conversely, if you reduce food intake excessively while increasing exercise, it can lead to poor recovery, intense hunger, and overeating at the next meal.

Try recording hunger, food intake, sleep, and fatigue on exercise days versus non-exercise days for about 2 weeks. Aerobic exercise is more sustainable when viewed as a lifestyle element for building cardiorespiratory fitness and metabolic health, rather than a punishment to offset what you have eaten.

Aerobic exercise intensity is not determined by speed alone

The intensity of the same walking speed varies depending on fitness, incline, heat, and medications. You can adjust according to your individual condition by using the talk test, perceived exertion, and heart rate together. Wrist heart rate monitors have errors due to movement and skin contact, so do not rely on a single number.

Calories on exercise devices are estimates and are not units that accurately offset food intake. Improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness, blood pressure,blood sugarmood, and sleep are also important results, more so than weight change.

Record exercise volume by time, intensity, and frequency

It depends on the cause and severity of the pain. If the impact of walking is uncomfortable, consider low-weight-bearing activities such as indoor cycling, aquatic exercises, or an upper-body ergometer, and keep a record of whether the pain continues to increase during or the day after exercise.

Sharp pain, swelling, joint locking, or sudden weakness are not signals to push through and keep walking. If your gait changes significantly or daily functioning declines to avoid pain, prioritize evaluating the cause and checking rehabilitation guidelines over meeting your exercise volume goals.

How should I use the heart rate zones and calories on my wearable device?

Wrist-worn devices estimate intensity and energy expenditure based on movement, heart rate, and entered physical information. Since errors can occur depending on skin contact, the type of exercise, medication, or heat, do not add the displayed calories as an exact allowance for food intake.

Use it to observe trends in activity time and heart rate response under similar conditions with the same device. It is easier to verify if the device's numbers match your body's response if you also record the talk test, perceived exertion, and recovery time.

Is fasted aerobic exercise more effective for weight loss?

While the ratio of fuel used during exercise may vary, long-term body fat reduction depends on total energy balance and consistency. If you experience dizziness or a decline in performance, do not insist on exercising on an empty stomach.

Do I have to do it every day?

You can divide the total weekly volume over several days. Include rest days or low-intensity activities while monitoring your recovery and joint condition.

Will I lose muscle if I only do aerobic exercise?
