Meaning of Strength Training

Strength training is an activity that requires muscles to exert force against external resistance. This includes weights, bands, bodyweight exercises, and machine exercises, and it is important for maintaining and increasing muscle mass and function during weight loss.

What is included in strength training?

Strength activities involve using resistance, which includes not only dumbbells, barbells, and machines, but also resistance bands, squats, push-ups, climbing stairs, and lifting heavy objects. Train major muscle groups in a way that suits your current fitness level.

Rather than the name of the exercise, it is more important whether the muscles are stimulated to exert more force than usual and gradually adapt.

Why is it necessary during weight loss?

Under energy restriction, lean body mass may decrease along with fat. Strength training and sufficient protein signal the body that muscles are needed, helping to maintain strength and function.

Even if weight loss is slow, waist circumferenceif fat decreases and strength is maintained, it can be a positive change.

How often should I do it?

Physical activity guidelines recommend that adults engage in strength activities for major muscle groups at least 2 days a week. Beginners should start with one set and a few movements to learn the proper form, then slowly increase the sets, repetitions, or resistance.

How can I start safely?

Move at a controlled speed without holding your breath, staying within a pain-free range of motion. Initially, you may learn the movements from a professional or use stable equipment.

Stop and seek a medical evaluation if you experience chest pain, fainting, sudden severe pain, muscle weakness, or abnormal sensations.

How do I determine the weight and number of repetitions?

Rather than following a single correct answer, the priority is to find a level of resistance where the last few repetitions are challenging but you can still maintain proper form. Beginners can start with a weight that allows for 8 to 12 stable repetitions per exercise; if joint pain occurs or you find yourself holding your breath, lower the resistance. The repetition range may vary depending on your goals, experience, and equipment.

If you can comfortably perform the target repetitions with the same weight for several consecutive days, slightly increase the weight or add more repetitions. Recording small increases allows you to verify if you are actually getting stronger without making excessive changes.

How should I interpret the scale while losing weight?

When starting strength training, the amount of glycogenwater stored in the muscles and the inflammatory response following exercise may cause short-term weight gain or a plateau. If you interpret this immediately as an increase in body fat and further reduce your food intake, the quality of your recovery and training may decline.

Record your weekly average weight along with your waist circumference, how your clothes fit, and the weight and repetitions for the same exercises. Even if weight change is minimal, if your waist circumference decreases while strength is maintained or increased, it suggests that your body composition and function are changing in a positive direction.

How should I structure a weekly program?

Initially, select a balanced mix of primary movements such as squats (or standing up from a chair), pushing, pulling, hip hinging, and core stabilization. To keep the schedule simple, start with full-body workouts 2 times a week with recovery days in between, rather than training the same muscles intensely on consecutive days.

Why looking only at muscle mass is insufficient

If there is continuous functional decline or unexpected muscle loss, nutrition, underlying diseases, and the effects of medication should be evaluated together.

Strength training is not just about increasing the weight of equipment

Resistance can be created using equipment, bands, body weight, and daily movements. The important thing is to provide appropriate stimulation to the target muscles, allow for recovery, and gradually increase the difficulty. Consider not only the number of sets and weight, but also the range of motion, speed, pain levels, and the number of repetitions you could have performed.

Muscle soreness the next day may occur after unfamiliar movements or increased exercise volume, but it is not a prerequisite for effectiveness. Even without significant pain, muscle adaptation can progress if repetitions, weight, and movement stability improve over the long term.

Unlike mild stiffness, sharp joint pain, severe swelling on one side, or very dark urine are not signals to push through the exercise. Rather than continuing intense training on the same area without recovery, adjust your rest and exercise volume and have any abnormal symptoms evaluated.

Can I preserve muscle during weight loss just by increasing protein?

While protein is an essential element for muscle maintenance, it must be accompanied by stimuli used for the muscles, sufficient overall energy, and sleep. If you only increase supplements without exercise or reduce total intake excessively, it is difficult to preserve strength and lean body mass to the desired extent.

Record the performance of key movements, daily functioning, and the rate of weight change together. If you have kidney disease, are pregnant, have specific metabolic disorders, or have a very low food intake, do not arbitrarily increase protein goals significantly; instead, adjust them with medical staff based on your current diet and health status.
