What is the sympathetic nervous system?
The sympathetic nervous system is a part of the autonomic nervous system that regulates the functions of the heart, blood vessels, sweat glands, and various other organs without the need for conscious commands. It distributes the body's resources to where they are needed when exercising, standing up suddenly, adapting to heat and cold, or responding quickly to danger.
While it is often described as the 'fight-or-flight response,' it is not a system that only operates during crises. It remains active to some extent at all times, with signals increasing or decreasing according to the situation.
Where does it fit within the autonomic nervous system?
The autonomic nervous system can be described as consisting of the sympathetic nervous system, the parasympathetic nervous system, and the enteric nervous system, which regulates intestinal motility. Signals from the central nervous system lead to peripheral ganglia and target organs, affecting cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, and secretory glands.
The term 'autonomic' does not mean it is completely separate from our will. Conscious and environmental changes, such as breathing, exercise, emotions, and sleep, can also influence autonomic nervous responses.
Is it the opposite of the parasympathetic nervous system?
The sympathetic nerves primarily support responses needed for activity, while the parasympathetic nerves support responses needed for rest, digestion, and recovery. Although they often act in opposite directions on the same organ, it is not a structure where one side turns off completely whenever the other turns on.
The two do not simply compete with each other but are adjusted together according to the situation. Therefore, it is difficult to define the balance of the entire body with a single number, such as 'sympathetic 80, parasympathetic 20'.
Which signaling substances are involved?
Acetylcholine is involved in the preganglionic signals of the sympathetic nerves, and norepinephrine acts on target receptors at many postganglionic terminals. Epinephrine secreted from the adrenal medulla can also be involved in systemic responses.
There are exceptions, such as sweat glands, which use neurotransmitters different from the general description. Understanding it as 'adrenaline is the entirety of the sympathetic nervous system' may lead to overlooking various pathways and tissue-specific differences.
How does it affect the heart and blood pressure?
During physical activity, the heart rate and contractile force change, and vascular tension is regulated. Accordingly, heart rateand blood pressurethese may change, but the two values do not always move in the same proportion or direction.
An increase immediately after exercise and a change that starts suddenly while resting have different contexts. If accompanied by chest pain, dyspnea, or fainting, it is explained as a sympathetic nervous system response and immediate action is taken without waiting.
What changes occur in breathing and digestion?
When preparing for physical activity, the airways may widen and breathing may change, and gastrointestinal motility and secretion may decrease depending on the situation. This may be linked to experiences such as dry mouth, stomach discomfort, or changes in bowel patterns when nervous.
However, abdominal pain, diarrhea, andconstipationcannot all be attributed to the sympathetic nervous system. More common or important causes, such as food, infection, medication, and intestinal diseases, are checked together.
How does it involve blood glucose and energy mobilization?
When the body needs energy for immediate use, signals related to the mobilization of stored fuel in the liver and energy in adipose tissue may change. This process is a physiological response to adapt to activity, blood sugarand the regulation of several hormones is involved together.
The fact that there is a sympathetic nervous system response does not necessarily mean that body fat has decreased. Long-term weight changes must be viewed together with intake, consumption, sleep, activity, and treatment over a certain period.
Is it normal for it to be activated during exercise?
During exercise, sympathetic nervous system activity, heart rate, and respiration increase to supply oxygen and energy to the muscles. The trend of values decreasing again during recovery after exercise also varies depending on physical fitness and environment.
Heat, dehydrationlack of sleep, and caffeine can increase the heart rate even at the same exercise intensity. Do not ignore the body's warning signals or adjust medication just to meet a target heart rate.
Are stress and anxiety the same thing?
Psychological stress and anxiety can also be accompanied by sympathetic nervous system responses, but the cause is not confirmed as anxiety simply because there is throbbing or trembling. Fever, anemia, thyroid disease, hypoglycemia, and heart rhythm problems can also create similar symptoms.
Conversely, even if there are no significant abnormalities in tests, care is needed if anxiety and lack of sleep impair daily functioning. This is not treated as a matter of choosing only one between a physical cause and a psychological context.
Are palpitations and sympathetic hyperactivity the same?
palpitationsPalpitations are symptoms of feeling the heartbeat prominently. Since the actual pulse may be fast, or the pulse may be normal but felt strongly, it is not a direct measurement result of sympathetic nervous system activity.
Record the start and end times, whether you were resting or active, the speed and regularity of the pulse, and whether there was chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting. If these recur, medical staff will select an ECG and other necessary tests.
Can balance be measured with HRV?
Heart Rate Variability (HRV) analyzes the change in time between consecutive heartbeats and can provide information related to autonomic nervous system regulation. However, it is affected by breathing rate, posture, exercise, alcohol consumption, sleep, age, and the measuring device.
A 'stress score' from a smartwatch app or a single HRV measurement is not used to diagnose sympathetic hyperactivity. Trends under the same conditions can be referenced, but they do not replace symptoms or medical evaluation.
How are caffeine and Ma Huang connected?
