Meaning of Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis

Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis is the energy expended during daily movements, excluding sleeping, eating, and planned exercise. It includes standing, walking, using stairs, housework, maintaining posture, and unconscious movements, and is commonly referred to as NEAT.

What is included in Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT)?

All daily movements that are not planned exercise, such as waking up, washing, getting dressed, commuting, talking while standing, climbing stairs, cleaning, and grocery shopping, consume energy. Even small movements, like shifting your posture in a chair or moving your feet, accumulate. This combined expenditure is called NEAT.

Sleep and Thermic Effect of Food, running or strength trainingexercises performed with a specific purpose are excluded from NEAT. NEAT exists even on days you do not exercise, and on days you do exercise, activities during non-exercise hours are calculated separately. This is why exercise time and total daily activity level are not the same thing.

Why is it important for total daily energy expenditure?

Basal/resting metabolism and the thermic effect of food vary by person and are difficult to change significantly in a short period. In contrast, daily activity can vary every day depending on occupation, mode of transport, and living environment. A person who spends most of the day sitting and a person who is constantly moving may have different total activity energy even if their exercise time is the same.

The fact that there are large individual differences in NEAT does not mean that the calories of a specific action can be precisely calculated. Estimates vary based on weight, intensity and duration of movement, and the measuring device. The important point is not just 'whether you exercised,' but how you spent the rest of your time.

How is exercise different from NEAT?

Exercise is an activity planned and repeated for the purpose of improving health or physical fitness. NEAT consists of movement and postural changes that occur during daily life. The two are not competing concepts but together constitute the day's activity energy.

If movement during the remaining time decreases due to fatigue after exercising, there may be a difference from the expected total energy expenditure. Conversely, on days with many short trips and household chores, activity expenditure may be higher than usual even without separate exercise.

Why can NEAT decrease during weight loss?

When energy intake decreases and weight is lost, the energy required for the same movement changes. As fatigue and hunger increase, you may unconsciously move less or spend more time sitting. These changes cannot be viewed solely as a lack of willpower; they may be a behavioral adaptation to energy deficiency.

If you only record the number of planned exercise sessions, it is easy to miss this decrease. When weight loss plateaus, before adding more exercise, check how your daily steps, standing time, and movement and rest during work have changed. If you experience severe fatigue, your intake, sleep, and recovery plans should also be reviewed.

How can it be measured?

In research, it is evaluated using a combination of methods such as activity rooms, accelerometers, posture sensors, and the doubly labeled water method. In daily life, some of it can be estimated through step counts, activity time, and sitting time via smartphones or wrist-worn devices. Activities with little wrist movement, such as household chores, upper body movements, or cycling, may not be accurately captured.

The calories displayed by a device are not values directly measuring an individual's actual NEAT. It is better to use them to see if your movement has increased compared to usual while maintaining the same device and settings. In addition to step counts, recording how many times you broke up long periods of sitting makes it easier to change behavior.

How can it be increased in daily life?

Rather than grand goals, it is more realistic to attach short movements to existing schedules. You can change your environment by standing or walking during phone calls, using stairs for about one floor, walking one stop when using public transportation, moving briefly after meals, or avoiding moving items all at once.

Since standing for long periods can also put a strain on the back and legs, the goal is not to maintain one posture for a long time. Alternate between sitting, standing, and walking, and do not overexert yourself if you experience pain or dizziness. This is an approach to filling the day's total movement rather than replacing exercise.

How should numerical goals be set?

The same number of steps is not necessary for everyone. It is better to check your current level for about a week, increase it slightly within a feasible range, and monitor fatigue, pain, and sleep together. The appropriate level is not the same for athletes, manual laborers, and people in recovery.

Prioritize actual sustainability over charts that claim a specific movement must burn a certain number of calories. In weight management, NEAT works together with diet, planned exercise, sleep, and overall health status.

Reasons for separating NEAT and exercise expenditure

NEAT is the energy expenditure of daily movements excluding planned exercise. It includes walking during commutes, working while standing, household chores, and frequently changing postures, but does not include basal metabolism during sleep or the thermic effect of food. Daily step count is an important clue, but it does not capture all movements such as upper body work and standing time.

If you move less during the rest of the day due to fatigue after starting exercise, some of the increased expenditure from exercise may be offset. Conversely, on days you do not exercise, daily activity expenditure can be high if there is a lot of commuting and childcare. Both interpretations, 'I exercised, so my activity level is sufficient' and 'I couldn't exercise, so there is almost no expenditure', are oversimplified.

Record NEAT increases in sustainable units

Rather than forcing 10,000 steps at once, add repeatable actions such as short walks, using stairs, or standing while on the phone to your current average. By recording your step count along with continuous sitting time, the number of walks after lunch, and weekly fatigue, you can verify whether increasing the numbers is hindering your recovery.

If you have joint pain, dizziness, or severe fatigue, do not unconditionally increase standing time. Daily activity is not a substitute for an exercise prescription but one layer of total activity, and it must be adjusted along with exercise and rest that fit your physical strength and health status.

If the step count is the same, is the NEAT also the same?

Step counts only show a portion of your daily movement. There are activities that are not fully captured by steps, such as standing, doing housework, changing posture, or carrying objects; energy requirements also vary depending on stride length, speed, and body weight.

Rather than comparing your 10,000 steps and calories burned with others, observe the trends of your usual steps, sedentary periods, and activity scenes on the same device. Even if the numbers are the same, it is worth checking whether long periods of sitting have decreased.

Can NEAT decrease unconsciously during weight loss?

When energy intake decreases and fatigue increases, a compensatory response may occur where you spend more time sitting and move or gesture less. Even if you maintain your exercise routine, if movement during the rest of the day decreases, the total expenditure may differ from what was expected.

Compare step counts, stairs, continuous sedentary time, and subjective fatigue before and after weight loss. If the decrease in movement is significant, check first whether the calorie deficit, sleep, and recovery are excessive rather than simply adding more exercise.

Can I calculate calories from housework the same way as exercise calories?

Housework and caregiving certainly use energy, but the calories shown on devices and tables are average estimates. Because the type and intensity change constantly, it is difficult to precisely add up every activity and convert it into an allowable intake amount.

Instead of calories, record which activities you did for how many minutes and how your fatigue felt. Increasing repeatable housework and movement is useful, but it does not fully replace the functions of planned aerobic and strength training.

How can people with limited mobility increase NEAT?

If standing and walking are difficult, you can use small activities suited to your current function, such as arm movements while sitting, ankle pumps, posture changes, or wheelchair movement within a possible range. The goal is not to endure pain to meet a standard step count.

If there are risks of falls, cardiopulmonary diseases, or restrictions following surgery or injury, confirm safe movements and frequency with a physical therapist or medical staff. Record pain, dizziness, and next-day function after increasing activity to adjust the range.

If my step count is high, can it be seen as having high NEAT?

Step count is an important clue, but it is not the entirety of NEAT. It also includes standing time, stairs, housework, occupational movements, and maintaining posture. Even with the same step count, expenditure can vary depending on speed, body weight, and the movement environment.

Does NEAT automatically increase on days I exercise?

Not necessarily. If fatigue after exercise leads to sitting longer or moving less during the remaining time, some of the expenditure may be offset. Look at exercise time along with total daily steps and sitting time.

Do I lose more weight working while standing than while sitting?

Standing can increase opportunities for movement compared to sitting, but standing alone does not guarantee significant weight loss. It is better to repeat habits of walking briefly and changing posture rather than maintaining the same posture for a long time.

Can NEAT decrease during weight loss?

If intake is significantly reduced and fatigue accumulates, unconscious movements and daily activities may decrease. If you maintained your exercise but your daily steps and vitality decreased, you should review your weight loss plan and recovery status together.
