What is VO₂max (Maximum Oxygen Uptake)?
VO₂max is the maximum amount of oxygen the body can intake and utilize per minute as the intensity of exercise using large muscles increases. It reflects cardiac output, the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood, and the oxygen extraction capacity of the muscles.
aerobic exerciseWhile it is an important indicator of capacity, it does not represent all elements of exercise performance, such as technique, muscle strength, and motivation.
How is it measured?
Using a treadmill or cycle, intensity is increased incrementally while the volume of inhaled and exhaled air, as well as oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations, are measured via a mask. ECG blood pressureand subjective symptoms can also be monitored simultaneously.
Whether maximum effort was achieved is determined using a plateau, where oxygen uptake does not significantly increase even if exercise intensity rises further, and several auxiliary criteria.
How is it different from VO₂peak?
The highest observed oxygen uptake is called VO₂peak, even if the maximum criteria were not met during the test. One may not reach a true maximum due to illness, pain, or unfamiliarity with the equipment.
Some studies and devices use the two terms interchangeably. Check if the testing method and the reason for termination are listed next to the value.
What is the difference between absolute and relative values?
Absolute VO₂ is expressed in L/min and indicates the amount of oxygen used by the entire body per minute. Relative VO₂ is expressed as mL/kg/min by dividing this by body weight in kg, making it easier to compare individuals of different sizes.
If body weight decreases, the relative value may increase even if the absolute capacity remains the same. Conversely, muscle mass if body weight increases, the change in the relative value may be small even if actual performance improves.
How do smartwatches estimate it?
Wearables estimate VO₂max using the speed of outdoor walking or running, heart rate, and personal information. Wrist sensor contact, incline, weather, medication, and the type of exercise can affect the margin of error.
Rather than directly comparing absolute values between devices from different companies, observe long-term trends using the same device under similar conditions.
How should I interpret the average value?
Distribution varies depending on age, gender, physique, sports discipline, and testing protocols. A single average table from the internet may not match the specific population or testing method used.
Your own performance capability without symptoms and trends from repeated tests may be more practical than percentiles. If a medical condition is present, clinical criteria are used.
How can I improve?
Regular moderate-intensity continuous exercise and some high-intensity intervals can contribute to improving VO₂max. Initially, steadily increase the total weekly time and frequency, then add intensity within a recoverable range.
Resistance training, sleep, and adequate nutrition are also the foundation for sustaining training. You do not have to perform at maximum intensity every time.
How is it related to weight management?
As VO₂max increases, the same daily activities may feel less strenuous, and it may be easier to sustain more activity. However, the value itself does not guarantee the amount of fat burned or Calorie deficitdoes not guarantee.
During weight loss, relative values may improve due to changes in the denominator; therefore, record walking speed, exercise duration, recovery, and absolute workload together.
Error Factors in Testing and Exercise
Recent illness, lack of sleep, Caffeinealtitude, temperature, and familiarity with the testing equipment can affect the results. To observe changes in the same person, keep the equipment and protocol as consistent as possible.
Medications such as beta-blockers can alter heart rate response, and anemia or lung disease can limit oxygen transport and utilization. Inform the examiner of your medications and medical history.
Criteria for Safe Evaluation
Do not attempt maximum testing on your own if you experience chest pain, a feeling of impending fainting, abnormal shortness of breath, or new-onset palpitations during exercise. If there is a risk of cardiovascular or pulmonary disease, a supervised exercise test may be necessary.
If wearable values suddenly drop, check the sensor and exercise conditions; however, if the actual decline in performance and symptoms persist, seek medical evaluation.
How do I record training changes?
Repeatedly record heart rate, speed, and perceived exertion on the same flat course or at the same cycle power. Look not only at the VO₂max estimate but also at whether you move faster at the same heart rate, and how your breathing after exercise and next-day fatigue change.
Compare in 4 to 8 week intervals, noting any illness, heat, or weight changes. By checking if the absolute workload remains the same even if relative VO₂max increases, you can better distinguish between changes in the denominator and actual physical fitness improvement.
If someone who only recorded running switches to cycling, the value may decrease due to different muscles used and familiarity. When judging training effects, repeat the same discipline and testing method if possible, and establish a new baseline from the day the discipline was changed.
Can relative VO₂max automatically increase if weight decreases?
Since relative VO₂max is the oxygen uptake per minute divided by body weight in kg, the number can increase if the denominator (weight) decreases, even if the absolute oxygen uptake remains the same. This change may be meaningful for running performance, which involves moving while supporting body weight, but it is not evidence that cardiopulmonary capacity has improved by the same margin.
During a weight loss period, look at absolute VO₂, speed/power on the same course, heart rate, and perceived exertion along with the relative value. If only weight decreased while workload or recovery worsened, do not interpret the increase in the number as a complete improvement in fitness. Conversely, if you maintain a higher workload at the same heart rate even if weight is the same, it may suggest actual training adaptation.
Can results be compared directly if the testing methods are different?
Treadmills and cycles use different muscles, weight-bearing levels, and familiarity, so results may differ for the same person. Graded exercise tests that directly analyze gas, field running tests, and smartwatch estimates also differ in measurement principles and termination criteria. Connecting decimal values from different methods on a single graph may exaggerate changes.
When monitoring changes, maintain the same equipment, activity, similar time of day, and physical condition; mark the day the testing method changed as a new starting point for comparison. If you experience chest pain, feelings of fainting, unusual shortness of breath, or have a risk of cardiopulmonary disease, the cessation criteria and supervised environment set by medical staff take priority over competing for maximum values.

Frequently Asked Questions about VO₂max
Does a higher VO₂max lead to better weight loss?
While it may be advantageous for aerobic fitness and exercise performance, changes in body fat depend on overall energy balance, diet, and consistency of activity.
Is the VO₂max on a smartwatch accurate?
It is an estimated value based on heart rate, speed, and other data. While it can be used to track trends on the same device, it is not the same as direct respiratory gas analysis.
Are VO₂max and VO₂peak the same?
VO₂max is sometimes distinguished as the value that reaches a plateau after meeting maximum criteria, while VO₂peak is the highest value observed during the test.
Does VO₂max increase when body weight decreases?
The relative value (mL/kg/min) may increase because the denominator, body weight, has decreased. You must check if the absolute oxygen uptake and actual speed or power have also improved.
